Do you wish there were more to this life?

#livingmybestlife probably started trending when some celebrity posted a selfie on Instagram while skiing in the Alps or tanning in Turks & Caicos.

Now my besties and I text it to each other with utter sarcasm:

just dumped my smoothie in my purse #livingmybestlife
I think we have ants #livingmybestlife
my kids aren’t speaking to me…again #livingmybestlife

Hashtag or no hashtag, sarcasm or in all seriousness, living my best life is a very loaded statement.

One of my clients said to me recently, I know how to live. I know how to do laundry and make dinner and get myself to work. But I don’t know how to live a life.

After our session, I texted her. I told her I couldn’t stop thinking about what she said and that I had written this down in my notebook:

I don’t know how to live a {meaningful, authentic, non-reactionary, contented} life.

She texted back:

Yes. That’s exactly it.

I think we all for the most part know how to live. We know how to get dressed, how to feed ourselves, how to go about the business and busyness of life, how to portray to the world that we’ve got our act together.

But in a world of #livingmybestlife when we’re all comparing our realistic, sometimes-not-so-pretty truths with everyone else’s filtered hashtag facades, we’re left wondering:

Is this all there is? (even as a Christian) (or maybe even especially as a Christian)

If I could, I would strike best and perfect out of our collective lexicons.

And I would replace those words with better ones…words like:

depth   intention   simple   purpose   gentle   wholehearted   authentic   contented

What so many of us are really after is a life filled with meaning. Pared down to the basics. Not so caught up in things that distract.

I told my husband recently that all he – or anyone for that matter – really needs to know about me is that I love God, I love him, I love our family, I love my friends, and I love my work. That’s it. That’s all there is to it.  I don’t want the drama, the chaos, the rushing, the extra trappings any more.  I just want peace and meaning and hope.

I’m here to say that no matter your age or your life circumstances, you can learn to live a simpler life, a peaceful life, a contented life, an authentic life, a meaningful life, with steadier relationships and a deeper connection with God.
