I have loved God since I was a little girl. I have known Jesus since I was fifteen. I spend time with him every day and I’m always up for trying something new, for going deeper in my relationship with him.

So, in the sweet group I moderate on Facebook (that I’d LOVE for you to join!), I decided to toss out an idea and the response was awesome.

I listed a handful of spiritual disciplines – that’s just a fancy way of saying to put yourself in a position to get closer to God – and asked the women to pick one to focus on a bit more in the upcoming month.

(Of course, there is grace. There is no point system or anything like that. We’ll just check in with each other and share how it’s going and encourage each other to keep trying or celebrate each other when we’ve done something new.)

Among the choices – journaling, a daily gratitude list, reading the Bible every day, fasting, praying outloud with a spouse or friend, switching to Christian music, finding a church to attend regularly, figuring out your spiritual gifts, discovering a place to serve in your church or community, joining a small group – I chose Scripture memory.

I am in awe of women who have passages and passages (and whole books of the Bible even!) memorized. It is a discipline that I have not yet mastered, but I want to go deeper, and so this is the one I chose.

I landed on Philippians 1:6 as my first pass:

I am confident of this:
that God, who began a good work in me,
will carry it onto completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Here’s what I love about memorizing Scripture: it makes me think about Scripture more. (Wow, Beth, did you go to seminary for that deep theological insight??)

What I mean is that I wrote out that verse in my journal. And then I wrote it on a cute little piece of paper. And then I taped that cute little piece of paper on my bathroom mirror.

And then this morning, I read this out loud:

I am confident of this

Bam. I hadn’t even gotten to the meat of the verse, but I was already stopped in my tracks. I want to be the kind of woman who is CONFIDENT OF THIS and then fill in the blank something that is super important. I can be wishy-washy. Not in what I believe, but in how I let my beliefs actually affect my life. Okay, so I am confident of this…

that, God

Bam again. Again, I’m not even to the crux of the verse yet and I stopped. I am confident of this: that GodThat, God. That, God. That, God. I am confident that God can do anything. I am confident in God.

I have only gotten that far with the verse, but listen, it’s already impacted me. It’s already started to sink into joint and marrow. I love and follow and obey and serve a God that I can be confident in because HE IS GOD.

So, if you’re looking to go deeper, pick a new thing and join us! I can’t wait to see what God is going to do in me and through the group and in you. In fact, I’m confident that God who began a good work in you will carry it unto completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Life isn't always how we want it. When change seems elusive, and we're stuck in old routines, a gentle push or some self-reflection can make a difference. Let these questions be that nudge to get you moving.
